"we’re the first generation in modern history to end up poorer than our parents."

Hrmm. My grandfather, the very first person in my entire family tree to achieve a post-secondary degree, graduated from business school. In 1929, so you might see where that went. The next decade consisted of scraping by, depression, hyperinflation, terrible drought, and famine. Followed by another near decade of devastating total war, poverty, starvation, ethic purges, mass extermination, etc. Followed by a 30-40 year cold war under the constant threat of nuclear annihilation, punctuated by a never ending string of truly awful regional conflicts.

While I feel genuinely bad for the rotten luck of those who graduated in 2008, at least in this country they are not facing starvation and six other competing threats of annihilation.

So when you hear "Entitled" and "Millennial", it's because of wildly selfish statements like this. This article is interesting and brings up solid points, but that kind of display sinks the whole thing.

If the generations before did such a bad job, and the current generation has it so bad, then you are positing that you'd have been better off being born in what 1970? 1960? 1930? What??? Do you know that the interest rate for residential home loans in the 1980's was 15% or more? How many women or minorities were able to get a college degree? Or white-collar job until the 1990's?

The author is comparing the poor position that a young generation as a whole finds itself in with the better position that only the most successful members of a mature generation find themselves after working for 40+ years to get there.

Interesting article but so hard to read! Edit: More readable URL. https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/poor-millenn...
