What a great film, one of my all-time favorites. I remember seeing it in the theater without knowing anything about it, and walking out completely stunned and overwhelmed. It felt like I’d just experienced something that would stay with me for the rest of my life.
It belongs up there with Apocalypse Now, Mad Max / The Road Warrior, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Blade Runner, and the rest.
I saw it again on the big screen for the first time in years. It moved me, which I had not been expecting. It was a great action flick when I saw it in the eighties, but as I get older I feel saddened about how he has to leave people behind such as Heather and even Rachel (his assistant). Even the part where he is expelled from his village is very sad. And I know not everyone likes Queen but I do love their soundtrack here.
It's a bombastic film, and rolls along nicely. At the Q&A last night there were some just criticisms of the film. Brenda (Roxanne Hart) is underutilised in the final bit, although by distracting Kurgan she helps Connor win. Clancy Brown should have been paid far more than he was. I would have liked to have seen more of the other immortals — Kim who was cut out entirely, the African guy who gets a small appearance and so on.
The remake will be interesting, and the cast holds out some promise.
I can't wait for a 4K release of Highlander II: The Quickening. I haven't seen it yet, but if the first Highlander is so great the second must be better!
"It's a good time to be a Highlander fan. As part of its 40th anniversary, a 4K restoration of the 1986 cult classic will return to theaters for a limited run. The re-release will be accompanied by an all-new poster, and a collector's edition UHD and Blu-Ray release that hits stores June 16."
Got to see this on the big screen again. Sometimes the film is corny, sometimes funny, but at times I find it strangely moving. It hits differently now that I am much older. A guilty pleasure.

A masterpiece.
