Certainly the world’s climate is worse. Wealth inequality is worse. I try hard not to be nostalgic, and even so I have to admit lots of things are not as good as they were in the 60s.

It’s not even like the physical infrastructure is all that much better. I live in a house built in the 50s, and clearly the people living in it then led a pretty similar life to mine. It just cost me a lot more money.

But why would I want the cassette experience in the first place?

Mix tapes were a very cool experience that a Spotify playlist can’t replicate. Beyond that, ask someone who wants it. I don’t, but they are a really cool piece of tech.

In general I think I have a lot more faith in medical professionals than it seems you do, but I do agree that the early mixed messaging around face masks in Feb. 2020 left me with a lot of distrust of Fauci in particular: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/07/01/8862991...

There is an English version of Le Monde as well.

Of course hooligans steal shopping carts. This was about people leaving shopping carts in the parking lot :)

> Rhodian sea law, from 900 BCE, states that if a salvor rescues property from the perilous seas, they are entitled to a share of the saved property.

Unlikely, given that the Greek alphabet didn’t exist in 900 BCE.

One improvement is a bed of concrete at the end of the runway that will catch the wheels and slow an airplane down to a stop. Pretty much everyone agrees it’s a good idea but it’s not always possible due to space needs or cost. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineered_materials_arrestor_...

If it costs too much it is also a bad idea. Why? Because that money can be spent on other safety.

If you're designing a new airport, sure, you can have runways with ample safety margins and generous overrun areas at the end of the runways. If you want to make an existing airport safer, and you can't buy up and demolish buildings around it, using EMAS is actually a cost-effective safety improvement.

The Wikipedia article says exactly the opposite, citing hard numers.

Also put the fire department right next to it. Or some kind of automated extinguisher.

There was a young girl who survived the crash of Asiana flight 214, but was run over by a firetruck because she was covered in extinguisher foam.

> Later investigations concluded that Ye was already dead from severe injuries caused by being ejected from the aircraft.

Wow, TIL. Thanks for pointing that out!

biased investigations

=> Don't drive through the foam.

Yes, we can have the automated extinguishers leave a clear path. :-)

Use drones if necessary.

Waymo was doing tests in NYC earlier this fall but it looks like there are legal difficulties to getting actual approval in New York: https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/09/09/waymo-driverless-cars-nyc...

not that I'm complaining, but you'd think the capital of the big3 atuomakers would have put up a bigger fight than NYC
