Until the chinese make a comparable open source model at some point

I’d say we’re about 5 years out from the Great Firewall of America, and requiring government ID associated with serial number to legally purchase components.

America will do that before gun control.

Think theyre just implying that the quoted text comes off as a bit pretentious..

oh, I think it's mostly frustration over how eager everyone is to delegate their thinking to literally anything else, accelerated by [gestures at reality]. Is frustration with apathy really pretentious?

Oof that would be hilarious/tragic

Or maybe people just have bills to pay and/or want to support their families. A little critical thinking and empathy goes a long way...

You sure about that? The average person couldn't care less about privacy and would gladly hand over a significant amount of data to whatever company asks. The sentiment on hacker news isn't the norm.

Even 40% of those numbers is higher than average though which is insane...

My understanding is that WhatsApp is also very heavily used in many countries.

Yea I was going to ask the same question about "thoughtful frontier labs". Not sure that's really a thing unless we're talking about being thoughtful of accumulating wealth and power for a small handful of people.

I have to assume "thoughtful frontier labs" is either a pretty small lab, or a place holder for a lab that doesn't exist. So many of these anti-meta posts come off as based entirely in the feelings of opinionated techies rather than actual reality.

Hm maybe I was sheltered or something but I was definitely not reading what industry leaders were saying when I was under 13. I don't think I really even knew who industry leaders were at that time...

I was definitely reading articles online by the age of 13. This is not exactly a small part of the discourse.

I'd expect, at this point, it's rather hard to avoid hearing about AI and its impact.

I agree it's not the most pleasant site to visit. I understand peoples desire to move the web back towards simplicity/html only with no js. But a little bit of css does not hurt and would make simple sites like this a lot more enjoyable to look at. Just my opinion..
