It makes total sense and I support this. I've met some of the upstream Linux maintainers at conferences over the years. Some (many?) of them are really oversubscribed and still plug away. They need relief from the drudgery of LTS stuff at some point.
Anyone here involved in backporting fixes to many stable branches in a user-land project will relate to the problem here. It's time-consuming and tedious work. This kind of work is what "Enterprise Linux" companies get paid for by customers.
